Inside Open Infrastructure: September 2026
OpenInfra's Job in the Open Source AI Stack
CNCF, OpenInfra and the PyTorch Foundation recently shared a stage in China for the first time, at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenInfra Summit + PyTorch Conference China 2026 in Shanghai. The unwieldy name turned out to be the point: a single inference request in production can touch GPU scheduling, KV cache, high-speed networking, vLLM and Kubernetes before it returns an answer.
The week produced a shared map of the open source AI stack. The PyTorch Foundation stewards the layer that trains and serves models. CNCF stewards the layer that operates and scales the workloads. Beneath both, OpenInfra provides and controls compute, networking, storage and isolation on the hardware itself.
Event sessions are now available on the OpenInfra Foundation YouTube channel.
